Appearance/Symptoms: Silvery streaks at the bottom of belt grooves. Streaks are soft and seem bonded to grooves. Deposits can be removed with small tool for verification.

Cause: Rubber dust from belt wear bonds to belt grooves. Drop in belt tension (worn automatic belt tensioner). Belt misalignment. High torsional vibrations (diesel engines).

Solution: Check tensioner for wear or excessive belt vibration and replace if necessary. Replace belt if there is a chirp or other belt noise.
