What does the light mean? | Code break downs | When further testing may be required

Check engine lights are designed to inform the driver of a problem the vehicle's computer has detected. Vehicles made 1996 or newer have a OBD-II system. OBD stands for on-board diagnostics. The vehicle's computer is constantly checking a series of sensors which relay information back to the computer. When a sensor provides readings which do not fit in the computer's programming, it turns on the check engine light, or service engine soon light, or MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) light.

When someone pulls the codes stored from the vehicle's computer it helps narrow the search of the literally thousands of items which could trigger a check engine light into a particular area.
